Sports Update: Building Momentum at RSJ

Sport at Rugby School Japan continues to grow at an exciting pace. Already this academic year, we have hosted and attended more fixtures than in any previous year, including multiple fixtures taking place on the same day. This alone is an important marker of the progress being made across our sporting programme.

Recent fixtures have highlighted both competitive development and the wider educational value of sport at RSJ. Our fixture against Meikei School was a positive example, combining competitive matches with meaningful cultural exchange. A joint warm-up led by Meikei’s dance troupe brought pupils together, and the closely contested fixtures that followed demonstrated how well our teams are now competing against well-established schools. Meikei’s decision to field stronger teams was a clear sign of the respect they have for RSJ and provided an excellent benchmark for our continued development.

We also saw our second contact rugby fixture of the year on Saturday, against St. Mary’s School. The standard of play, organisation, and commitment on display were outstanding and reflected the rapid progress we have made within our rugby programme.

Alongside external fixtures, the Inter-House Basketball competition held last week generated excellent energy across the school. Our pupils represented their Houses with pride, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship, reinforcing the importance of inclusive competition and community spirit. The consistently high standard of play across all age groups is a clear reflection of the quality of coaching at RSJ, which continues to raise expectations and drive performance. Congratulations to School House (Junior Boys), Sheriff House (Senior Boys), and Tudor House (Junior and Senior Girls) on their well-deserved successes. We now look forward to our next major House sporting event, Junior Inter-House Swimming, which promises to be another excellent celebration of participation and competitive spirit.

Looking ahead, our fixtures will now take place every Saturday for the remainder of the school year, offering regular opportunities for pupils to challenge themselves, develop confidence, and represent RSJ. I would like to thank all staff and coaches whose commitment and professionalism continue to drive this progress; their contribution is fundamental to where RSJ sport is today.

The RSJ Sporting Vision

Our vision is to establish Rugby School Japan as a leading centre for holistic sporting education in Asia. Through inclusive, high-quality programmes that integrate British sporting traditions with Japanese values, we aim to provide pupils with exceptional opportunities to pursue sporting excellence, challenge themselves at the highest appropriate level, and develop resilience, confidence, and character.

The progress we have seen across this term shows that RSJ sport is growing from strength to strength, with exciting developments still to come.
