Earlier in the term, 36 pupils from RSJ took part in the Tokyo Regional Round of the World Scholar’s Cup, held at Malvern College Tokyo. The World Scholar’s Cup is a renowned international academic tournament that brings together students from across the globe to celebrate learning, debate global issues, and develop skills in writing, public speaking, and critical thinking.
Throughout the two-day event, RSJ pupils immersed themselves in the tournament’s four core challenges: Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, the Scholar’s Challenge, and the fast-paced Scholar’s Bowl. Each event pushed participants to think creatively, communicate clearly, and work collaboratively under pressure – skills that are not only academically enriching, but invaluable preparation for university and beyond.
Among the many highlights of the weekend were the outstanding results achieved by our RSJ teams. Some of the achievements by our RSJ pupils include:
- Sumi, Leona and Eleanor’s team were the overall champion in the Senior Division
- Jaspar, Rintaro and Arron’s team received 3rd place overall in the Senior Division
- Mika, Ema and Yuma’s team received 2nd place overall in the Junior Division
- Sara, Miriam and Emma’s team received 3rd place overall in the Junior Division
Another highlight of the weekend was a remarkable live performance by pupil Yutong, who demonstrated how to fold a miniature origami crane small enough to sit on a pinky fingertip. His delicate artistry was streamed live for all attendees to see, drawing a captivated audience with widespread admiration and applause.
Beyond the competitions, pupils made new friendships with peers from Malvern College Tokyo and other participating schools, exchanging ideas and building connections that reflect the global spirit of the World Scholar’s Cup. For many, the experience was as much about cultural exchange and collaboration as it was about academic competition.
Participation in the World Scholar’s Cup opens doors to even greater opportunities: qualifying teams from this round may move on to a Global Round hosted in another international city, and potentially the Tournament of Champions at Yale University later in the year.
It was a weekend full of challenge, connection, and celebration, and we are incredibly proud of how our pupils represented RSJ.
