Few people ever have the chance to step behind the curtain of a major concert tour, to see how music, technology and creativity blend into one seamless performance. Early this term, 46 members of the RSJ community – pupils, parents and staff – were given that rare opportunity when they were invited to a private backstage tour and concert with renowned pop artist Kumi Koda, currently celebrating her 25th anniversary with her De-CODE tour.

The group explored five major departments that make large-scale performances possible: lighting, sound, stage management, hair and make-up, and costume. Pupils were surprised to learn that more than 300 professionals work behind the scenes to deliver a single show. They watched technicians test lighting cues, saw the sound team mixing audio live, and were introduced to cutting-edge technologies such as the drone camera used to project images onto massive screens during the concert.

The experience gave pupils direct insight into real-world careers in creative arts, technology and production, and into roles that require discipline, communication, problem-solving and teamwork. One of the most impressive moments was observing Kumi rehearse aerial choreography and a rapid costume-change sequence, demonstrating the preparation, strength and precision needed for professional performance work.

After rehearsal, pupils stepped onto the stage to meet Kumi Koda, who greeted them warmly and gifted each a souvenir. They even tried the hydraulic lift used to raise performers onto the stage, followed by a tour beneath the stage to see the pulley and trolley systems that move equipment invisibly during a show.

The day concluded with the full concert, a spectacular display of talent and creativity that included pyrotechnics, acrobatics and live drone footage. Pupils watched with new appreciation, knowing exactly how every moment had been created.

More than just entertainment, this experience showed pupils how many skills and careers exist behind the curtain, helping them connect their passions with potential future pathways. We are deeply grateful to Kumi Koda and her team for offering our community such an inspiring, hands-on learning opportunity.
