As the final term of the academic year draws to a close, we look forward to announcing the appointment of next year’s Senior Pupil Leadership Team.
Senior pupil leadership at Rugby School Japan plays a pivotal role in shaping the culture, ethos and environment of RSJ during these formative early years.
Pupil leaders include School-wide roles, such as Prefects and Peer Listeners, as well as Heads of Houses. They are entrusted with diverse responsibilities which span pastoral care, academic mentorship, cultural enrichment, and the promotion of sports and social responsibility.
Prefects serve as key intermediaries between the pupil body and the School’s staff, fostering open communication and ensuring that the pupils’ voices are heard through mechanisms like the School and House Councils.
Each role is carefully designed to promote RSJ’s core values of kindness, respect, integrity, and aspiration, and by embodying these values and motivating their peers to achieve excellence, senior pupils can leave an indelible mark on the School’s culture. Whether by mentoring younger pupils or championing initiatives such as Wellbeing Days and sustainability projects, senior pupils help to enrich the School and to build morale and confidence in their peers.
Alongside the benefits to the cultural environment of the School, the roles also provide unparalleled opportunities for personal growth for the pupils themselves. Pupils who excel in leadership positions cultivate skills such as effective communication, empathy, and good judgement, and they gain opportunities for the practising of techniques and approaches which will equip them with the confidence to take on leading roles in other walks of life.
The rigorous selection process reflects the seriousness of these roles. Candidates are chosen based on staff recommendations, pupil applications, and interviews, ensuring that each appointee demonstrates the maturity and dedication required to lead.
