SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) covers a wide range of learning differences. Every child is unique, and our role is to understand what support they need to feel confident, included, and successful in school. With the right guidance, students with SEND can thrive academically, socially, and personally – many go on to university and successful careers.
At RSJ, we support children across four broad areas of need, as outlined in the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice:
1. Communication and Interaction
Children with difficulties in speech, language, and communication may find it challenging to express themselves or understand others. This can make social interactions more difficult, including making friends, communicating ideas effectively, and interpreting what is said to them.
Some children may have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including Asperger’s or Autism, which can affect social understanding and interaction. Tailored support helps these pupils engage confidently with their peers and teachers.
2. Cognition and Learning
This area affects a child’s ability to think, understand, and learn. Pupils with difficulties here may need extra support in literacy, numeracy, or other areas of the curriculum.
Challenges may range from complex learning difficulties, such as Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) or Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), which require support across the curriculum, to specific learning difficulties like dyslexia or dyspraxia, which affect particular skills. With appropriate support, pupils develop strategies to succeed academically at their own pace.
3. Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
Some pupils experience difficulties in managing emotions, behaviour, or social relationships, which can impact their learning and wellbeing. This might include becoming withdrawn, anxious, or displaying disruptive behaviour.
Underlying mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression, or eating disorders, or diagnoses like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), can also affect a pupil’s ability to engage in school life. RSJ provides supportive structures and interventions to help pupils build resilience, self-regulation, and positive relationships.
4. Sensory and/or Physical Needs
Pupils with visual, hearing, multi-sensory, or physical impairments may require additional support or equipment to access learning fully. This includes adjustments to the classroom environment or teaching methods to ensure equal opportunities for participation.
These categories are not labels, they are starting points to help us understand each child’s needs and provide the support required to help them flourish. If you recognise any of these challenges in your child, or would like advice, the Personalised Learning (PL) team at RSJ is always available to offer guidance and support.
If you ever have any questions, the PL team would love to hear from you.
