At Rugby School Japan, we are all too aware of how fortunate our pupils are to have access to world-class facilities and resources that support an outstanding education. The Environment and Sustainability Club was established not only to give back to our school but also to make a meaningful difference in our local community.
This year, our club has taken part in a number of exciting initiatives aimed at building a greener, more thoughtful future.
Keeping Kashiwanoha Clean
Once a month, our pupils and staff come together to help clean the area around Kashiwanoha Campus Station. This regular litter-picking event is more than just a tidy-up—it’s a way of showing pride in our surroundings and helping protect the local environment.
Toy Drive
In December, we launched a Toy Drive, encouraging students to donate their old, unused toys to local charities. The response was overwhelming, with boxes filled and hearts warmed. It was a powerful reminder of the generosity and community spirit that defines our school.
Fast Fashion Project
Last term, the club investigated the environmental impact of fast fashion. Pupils completed wardrobe audits, discussed shopping habits, and reflected on the wider impact of our clothing choices.
One survey revealed that most students buy new clothes every few months—often at the start of each season—which is typical. However, some students admitted to shopping for new clothes every month, a habit that may be more wasteful than necessary. Clothes rarely wear out that quickly, and more sustainable options are available.
Many students said they shop at fast fashion outlets due to their convenience and affordability. While understandable, it’s important to consider the environmental cost. One suggestion from the club: explore second-hand stores, local markets, or sustainable brands. Some students already do this and have offered to support others who are interested in making the switch to more eco-friendly fashion choices.
From monthly clean-ups to campaigns on conscious consumerism, we at Rugby School Japan are proud to foster a culture of sustainability and social responsibility. Our pupils are showing that they care deeply about the world around them—and are eager to take action.
