Supporting Your Child with Prep at Home

Prep (homework) is an important part of learning, but large tasks can sometimes feel overwhelming for some students. A few simple strategies at home can help make prep time calmer and more productive.

Break tasks into smaller steps

Large tasks such as “write an essay” can feel daunting. One helpful strategy is chunking, which means breaking the task into smaller steps. You might write these together on a piece of paper or a small whiteboard:

  • Read the question
  • Brainstorm ideas
  • Write a simple plan
  • Draft the paragraphs
  • Write the conclusion
  • Check spelling and grammar

Focusing on one step at a time helps the task feel more manageable.

Create a consistent routine

Many students work best when prep happens at the same time and in the same place each day. A quiet, well-lit space with minimal distractions, ideally phone-free, can help students focus. Having a parent nearby for questions can also help them feel supported.

Lead by example

Students are often more motivated when others around them are also working. Sitting nearby and reading or completing a quiet task can help create a calm, focused environment.

Include short breaks and a good stopping time

Short breaks can help students refocus if they have a lot of prep. It is also important to finish at a reasonable time so students can relax and wind down before bed.

Help them find their “why”

It can be helpful to connect schoolwork with your child’s future goals. Whether it is a dream career, a passion, or a role model they admire, seeing how education links to their future can help motivate them.

Small routines at home can make a big difference to a child’s confidence and independence when it comes to learning.

These small routines can support all students but are particularly helpful for students who benefit from clear structure and organisation.
