A Year of Flourishing and Forward Movement

As Term 1 draws to a close it feels fitting to look back at the year through a single word that is woven through every corner of Rugby School Japan: progression.

Progression, by definition, is the process of developing toward an improved state.

Strengthening the Heart of School Life

Progression is not about rapid change for its own sake. It is the steady, intentional movement towards something stronger, wiser, and more fully formed. It is the process of building foundations that endure. And this year, we have seen that spirit at work across our community.

One of the clearest examples has been the continued expansion of our boarding provision. With the opening of Southfield and Town House, our campus now includes six single-sex boarding houses, each led by dedicated live-in teams. These houses do more than provide accommodation; they offer structure, belonging, and a sense of place – mirroring the traditions of our founding school in the UK while evolving to suit the needs of our pupils here in Japan.

A Connected Pathway for Learning

Progression has also defined our academic journey. This year, we strengthened our partnership with Clarence International School and Phoenix House International School, reinforcing the CEA 18 month to 18 year pathway. Together, we offer a connected educational experience from the earliest nursery years through to Sixth Form.

The value of this progression is clear: pupils experience continuity throughout their academic career, with each stage building deliberately on the last. This enables each pupil to grow through a coherent sequence of challenges, opportunities, and discoveries.

Milestones for Our Pupils

Within RSJ itself, pupils have made significant strides. Our GCSE pupils have graduated to Sixth Form, marking a significant step forward in their academic and personal development. And this year, we watched our first Year 13 cohort complete their time at RSJ.

Their destinations are as diverse as their ambitions – universities across Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond. Their next steps reflect both their global outlook and the strength of the foundations they have built here. They have set a fine example for those who follow.

Progression has also been evident within our parent community. The foundational work of our new Year and House Representatives has already begun strengthening communication, partnership, and the sense of shared purpose that defines RSJ. Their contributions remind us that a school grows best when its families grow with it.

Looking Ahead

Progression does not end with the close of a school year. It carries us into the next. As we prepare for a new term – and a new chapter, I am encouraged by how far we have come and by the direction in which we are moving. RSJ continues to grow not simply in size, but in maturity, clarity of purpose, and strength of community.

To our pupils, parents, and staff, thank you for the part you have played in this year’s journey. We move forward together, confident not only in how far we have come, but in how much more we can become.
