From Yakushima to Nagasaki: Rugby School Japan Explores the Country

Education is not just about lessons learned in the classroom. It is also about experiencing history, science, art, literature, and nature in the real world. That is why, this week, our pupils embarked on a series of immersive and enriching trips across Japan, designed to develop their independence, curiosity, and global awareness. Here is a glimpse into the adventures from our much-anticipated Trip Week.

Kagoshima & Yakushima Adventure

The Yakushima trip took pupils to Kagoshima and Yakushima, where they explored one of Japan’s most pristine natural environments. pupils began by flying to Kagoshima and visiting the scenic Shiroyama Observatory before taking a ferry to Yakushima Island.

On Yakushima, the group trekked through Yakusugi Land with local guides and learned about Yakushima’s ancient cedar forests. They also visited the Yakusugi Nature Museum, where they made forest clocks from Yakusugi wood, and explored the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center.

After returning to Kagoshima, pupils enjoyed lunch and a tour of the historic Sengan-en gardens before flying back to Tokyo.

Kyoto Cultural Immersion

The second group of RSJ pupils explored the cultural richness of Kyoto. After an early departure from Tokyo aboard the Shinkansen, pupils arrived at Kyoto Station and began their journey with a traditional yudofu (hot tofu) lunch at Kiyomizu Junsei. They then visited the historic Kiyomizu-dera Temple, where pupils explored individually.

In the afternoon, pupils participated in a hands-on fan-painting workshop at Marumasu Nishimuraya, with their creations to be delivered later to the school.

The second day started with a kimono dressing experience, followed by visits to Fushimi Inari Taisha. In the evening, pupils enjoyed a traditional performing arts show at Gion Corner before returning to the hotel.

On the final day, pupils toured TOEI Kyoto Studio Park, learning about Japan’s film and television history. The trip concluded with sketching and strolling through Arashiyama, followed by a Kyoto-style beef sukiyaki lunch.

Hiroshima Peace & History Tour

The Hiroshima trip provided pupils with powerful lessons about history, peace, and reconciliation. After a day enjoying Himeji’s breathtaking castle, pupils had the opportunity to explore Miyajima Island, where they took part in a traditional shamoji (wooden rice paddle) calligraphy experience. Guided tours of Itsukushima Shrine and Daishoin Temple offered deeper insights into Japanese culture and spirituality, followed by time to enjoy the island’s vibrant shopping street.

The next day, pupils visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, where they reflected on the tragic impact of the atomic bomb and the importance of striving for peace. Laying flowers at the Children’s Peace Monument was a particularly moving moment. The trip also included cultural recreation, such as karaoke evenings at the hotel, providing a balance between historical learning and shared fun.

Nagasaki History & Cultural Discovery

In Nagasaki, pupils embarked on a journey combining deep historical reflection and natural wonders. After arriving in the city, they began at the Nagasaki Peace Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum, where they attended a powerful survivor testimony session.

Later, pupils enjoyed riding the Mt. Inasa Slope Car to the observation deck, taking in breathtaking night views over Nagasaki before returning to their hotel for a well-deserved rest.

The second day saw pupils venture to Unzen, where they explored the steaming vents of Unzen Hell and enjoyed a scenic ropeway ride followed by a mountain hike.

On the final day, pupils visited the Dutch Goods Pavilion for souvenir shopping and took a Gunkanjima cruise, learning about the island’s history as a mining colony.

Throughout the trip, pupils also enjoyed local cuisine and deepened their understanding of Nagasaki’s resilience, history, and unique natural landscape.

These journeys enabled our pupils to engage with Japan’s rich history, unique ecosystems, and vibrant traditions while developing independence, cultural understanding, and life skills.

Whether trekking through Yakushima’s forests, discovering Kyoto’s timeless beauty, reflecting in Hiroshima, or exploring Nagasaki’s international heritage, our pupils returned with broadened horizons and lasting memories.
