Celebrating our Global Community at RSJ’s Global Day

Last week, Rugby School Japan celebrated its inaugural Global Day. In honour of International Mother Tongue Day, the School dedicated a full day to discovery, culture, and the diverse heritage that shapes our community. With more than 20 nationalities represented, it was a powerful reminder that at RSJ, every culture is seen, heard, and valued.

A Kaleidoscope of Colour and Energy

The day began with a sense of anticipation. “Before the parade, it was hard for me as an organiser to predict how many people would take part by dressing up,” shared Maggie Wong, Teacher of Chinese and Global Day event organiser. “But as soon as the first House marched in and the music started, the Sports Hall filled with colour and energy.”

From the parade of traditional attire to the dining hall draped in national flags, the atmosphere reflected the pride pupils take in their cultural heritage. As Maggie observed, “When the flags were hung up, I felt a sense of unity because everyone at RSJ was represented.”

Learning Through Connection

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to hands-on exploration. Pupils led and participated in cultural workshops ranging from Korean language lessons and Mexican Talavera tile drawing to a lively Cèilidh dance. Our pupil volunteers, who had spent weeks preparing to share their languages and traditions, were the true stars of the day.

The arts also played an important role in building connections. In the Black Box Theatre, a striking ballet performance by one of our Performing Arts Scholars and a dynamic K-pop solo reminded us that creativity often transcends language.

A Broader Perspective

In an address to the School, Principal Tony Darby reflected on the deeper purpose behind the celebration. He described Global Day as an opportunity to step off the familiar path and look outward.

“The more outward-looking we become, the more curious we are about other cultures and religions,” he explained. “That curiosity helps break down barriers and encourages us to see the world through a wider lens.”

For many pupils, the day revealed just how many languages, traditions, and stories exist within our own community. As Maggie reflected, “Global Day reminds us that the world can be a better place when we set aside our biases, embrace our differences, and learn from one another.”
