A Special Talk with Nobel Laureate Sir Richard J. Roberts

53 Rugby School Japan pupils had the rare privilege of attending a special lecture by Sir Richard J. Roberts, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, at the Kashiwanoha Conference Centre early this month. The event, hosted by the University of Tokyo, offered an inspiring glimpse into the life and mind of a world-renowned scientist.

Sir Roberts spoke about the fascinating role of luck in success, sharing how unexpected turns in his own journey – from his early days in the city of Bath, where he loved mathematics and snooker, to his groundbreaking discoveries in gene splicing – helped shape his career. He recalled being advised at a young age to “make full use of your luck,” a lesson that has guided him ever since.

Our pupils were captivated by his stories of working under James Watson, the co-discoverer of DNA’s structure, and learning about the curiosity and persistence that led to his Nobel-winning research. Beyond science, Sir Roberts shared how he has since used his influence to make a difference, from helping free imprisoned nurses in Libya during the HIV crisis to advocating for genetically modified crops as a solution to global hunger.

Perhaps the most powerful message of the day was his call to stay curious. Sir Roberts urged young people to keep asking questions and never stop exploring — advice that resonated deeply with our pupils.

What made the day even more memorable was Sir Roberts’ warmth and generosity. He spent time speaking individually with many of our pupils after the lecture, listening to their thoughts and questions with genuine interest. It was a truly inspiring encounter, and one that our pupils will surely remember for years to come.
