A Day of Stories, Community and Imagination

This year, Rugby School Japan celebrated its inaugural World Book Day, bringing together pupils and staff in a joyful celebration of creativity, imagination, and a shared love of reading.

Throughout the day, the school was filled with literary characters as pupils and staff arrived in an impressive range of costumes inspired by favourite books and stories. The creativity and enthusiasm on display brought energy and excitement to the entire school community, from timeless classics to contemporary favourites.

Three pupils were recognised for their creativity and effort, each receiving book vouchers as prizes, while Tudor House was awarded the House trophy for its outstanding participation and spirit. Departments across the school also embraced the occasion, joining pupils in the celebrations. The Marketing and Admissions team was named the winning department for its fun and collaborative enthusiasm.

Beyond the festivities, World Book Day also provided an opportunity to support a wider cause. Donations raised during the event contributed towards United World Schools (UWS). So far this academic year, the RSJ community has raised approximately ¥130,000 in support of UWS and its work building and running schools in Madagascar, Nepal, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

The Library also introduced a banned books display, encouraging pupils to engage with literature that has challenged ideas, perspectives, and conventions throughout history. Exploring stories from different viewpoints helps broaden understanding, cultivate empathy, and encourage thoughtful discussion, all important aspects of education both within and beyond the classroom.

More than anything, the day served as a reminder of the power of books to open windows into different experiences, cultures, and ways of thinking. Most importantly, it was a celebration thoroughly enjoyed by pupils and staff alike.

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners, and thank you to everyone who helped make Rugby School Japan’s first World Book Day such a memorable occasion, with special thanks to Ms Zakria who organised the day’s events. We look forward to seeing this celebration continue to grow in the years ahead.
