On 12 June 2025, we were delighted to host an enjoyable community evening bringing together families, staff, alumni, and members of Rugby School Global, including Neil Hampton, the CEO of the Group. The highlight of the event was the launch of a transformative fundraising programme and debenture scheme, inspired by the deep traditions of Rugby School UK and tailored to support the future of RSJ.
During the event, I had the pleasure of talking about the legacy of Lawrence Sheriff, whose original bequest in 1567 established Rugby School and still funds scholarships today. When I think back to the pupils I taught during my time at Rugby School, I am reminded of the most successful and grounded Rugbeians I encountered – several of whom benefited from scholarships. That same spirit of philanthropy and vision is now taking root here in Japan.
My hope is that we can set up and develop a scholarship and bursary fund that leads to more pupils experiencing all the great things we are doing at the moment.
The new Giving to Rugby School Japan campaign invites families, alumni, and friends of the school to become founding members of a supportive donor community. Contributions will go directly toward:
- Scholarships and bursaries: Opening RSJ’s doors to exceptional students from diverse backgrounds.
- Capital and enrichment projects: Creating spaces that inspire – from science labs to sports fields to theatres.
- Global partnerships and exchanges: Building empathy and global citizenship through student exchange and collaboration.
Supporters will be recognised through various Giving Circles, including the Legacy Circle, Principal’s Society, and Rugbeian Circle. Each tier celebrates generosity with acknowledgements, event invitations, and naming opportunities.
The evening also acknowledged the bravery and trust of RSJ’s founding parents, many of whom enrolled their children before the school’s campus was even completed. A new community app will soon be launched to make it even easier for families to connect, collaborate, and contribute to this growing network. Further details about this app will be circulated over the coming weeks.
As Rugby School Japan grows again this September, these new initiatives mark a pivotal moment in shaping the future of our school, anchored in heritage, focused on access, and committed to excellence without elitism.
