Rugby School Japan (RSJ) recently held its first fixture against Meikei High School, marking the start of what promises to be a long-term, enriching relationship. Our group of 40 students, including junior and senior boys and girls from Years 7-13, arrived at Meikei High School at 09:30 on Saturday, 18th January and were warmly welcomed, setting a positive tone for the day.
Building Connections Through Fun and Sport
After a brief introduction with their Meikei counterparts, the students participated in a joint warm-up dance led by Meikei, which eased any nerves and fostered a fantastic sense of camaraderie. The basketball matches kicked off the day with exciting performances.
RSJ’s junior boys dominated with a 14-0 win, while our junior girls played to an 8-8 draw. RSJ’s senior boys won 11-1, and our senior girls delivered a remarkable 30-0 victory. Sportsmanship and enjoyment were evident across all matches.
A Cultural Exchange
In a highlight of the day, girls participated in a friendly dodgeball match, learning the Japanese version of the game, which uses a single ball. This cultural exchange provided a fun opportunity for both teams to bond.
Football Matches and Reflection
Football matches followed, with RSJ’s junior boys narrowly losing 2-1, despite a strong performance from Sota N. Our senior boys ended the day with a thrilling 1-0 win, thanks to a late goal from Allen S.
Afterward, all students gathered for a meal where they enjoyed each other’s company and formed new friendships. Aser S. and Mia P., RSJ’s Sports Scholars, thanked Meikei High School for their hospitality and shared excitement for future exchanges, including the return fixture in February.
Looking Forward
The day was a fantastic combination of sports, culture, and camaraderie, laying the foundation for a lasting connection between our schools. Special thanks go to the staff—Ms. Courtney-Harris, Ms. Hailes, Mr. Mellor, and Mr. Futawatari—for their support. We eagerly anticipate the next steps in this partnership.
