Scholarships
Building on the historic Rugby School UK’s remarkable scholarship programme, RSJ
will offer a range of Scholarship Awards, allowing recipients to access exceptional
teaching, first-class facilities and a dedicated academic tutor, through the RSJ Scholars’
Programme.
At RSJ, scholarships are made without regard to financial status or background, to
pupils who show exceptional talent or ability in their chosen field.
Each Award will be for the duration of the pupil’s career at RSJ, subject to them
fulfilling annual review criteria.
ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP (YEARS 7-12)
These are awarded to pupils in or applying to Years 7-12 who demonstrate outstanding academic potential during the admissions process, with the expectation that they show leadership and ambition in academics throughout their time in the School. We will expect our academic scholars to progress to world-leading universities and become leaders in their chosen fields.
Academic Scholars’ Programme Rugby School Japan
Admissions
All scholars follow a tailored programme and work closely with a specialist mentor. Scholars will benefit from opportunities such as:
- Taking part in Scholars’ events and regular meetings, including formal dinners, symposiums and trips
- Collaborating with fellow scholars from their subject in other schools such as Rugby School UK and Rugby School Thailand, to pursue their academic development outside of the formal classroom
- Leadership involvement in the School’s academic forums and societies within the school
Scholarships will be reviewed annually, and we will expect our Academic Scholars to:
- Maintain outstanding effort grades in all subjects
- Receive consistently strong attainment grades in all academic subjects
- Uphold the values of RSJ and be an excellent role model to other pupils in all aspects of school life, but particularly in their commitment to academic matters
- Involve themselves fully in the academic life of the school beyond the classroom.
Academic Scholarship Award
In addition to the standard application process, Academic Scholarship candidates will be required to undergo additional interviews with subject specialists and senior RSJ staff.
Eligibility Criteria
- High CAT4 performance or evidence of consistently high grades in assessments or assignments
- Letter of recommendation by teacher at current school (could be RSJ for internal candidates)

EXPRESSIVE AND VISUAL ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS (YEARS 7-12 )
Creative thinking, experimentation and independent learning are an integral part of the Rugby School Japan (RSJ) ethos. Expressive and Visual Arts Scholarships are awarded to pupils identified as excelling in one or more of the many areas of Art and Design. RSJ boasts purpose built, spacious and superbly equipped workshops and gallery spaces across the campus. There will be opportunities to create, innovate, design, make and evaluate well-crafted design products, as well as develop a wide variety of Fine Art techniques.
Expressive and Visual Arts Scholars’ programme
All scholars follow a tailored programme and work closely with a specialist mentor.
Scholars will benefit from opportunities such as:
- Taking part in the Scholars’ Showcase and other events that bring Scholars together, such as trips and formal dinners, public exhibitions of their work and opportunities to receive tuition in exhibit curation
- Opportunities to attend Art and Design-based workshops and talks
- Additional support with developing Art portfolios
Eligibility Criteria
- Must have previously participated in local, national, or international art competitions or exhibitions.
- Has evidence of artwork showcasing technical skills and creativity (e.g., drawings, paintings, sculptures, or digital art)
- Letter of recommendation by teacher at current school
Scholarships will be reviewed annually, and we will expect our Expressive and Visual Arts Scholars to:
- Maintain strong effort grades in all subjects
Receive consistently outstanding attainment and effort grades in Art and Design - Uphold the values of RSJ and be an excellent role model to other pupils in all aspects of school life, but particularly in their approach and commitment to Art and Design
- Involve themselves fully in the co-curricular provision for Art and Design
- In most cases, to study Art and/or Design at GCSE/A Level
Expressive and Visual Arts Scholarship Award
In addition to the normal application process, Expressive and Visual Arts Scholarship applicants will have an assessment day where they are set tasks designed to test creativity, skill and interests, a portfolio review, and interview with a member of the SLT and the Head of Art and/or Head of Design.

PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS (YEARS 7-12)
Music, Dance and Drama are a central part of life at RSJ. We strongly promote performance as a means of developing confidence and resilience; the Performing Arts area embodies our ‘The Whole Person, The Whole Point’ philosophy.
Performing Arts Scholarships will be awarded to pupils who excel in areas such as singing, drama, or music with the expectation that they show leadership and ambition in Performing Arts throughout their time in the School.
Performing Arts Scholars’ Programme
All Performing Arts Scholars will be expected to show leadership and commitment to the RSJ Performing Arts programme, and all Scholars will have a mentor and follow a tailored programme.
There will be many opportunities for Performing Arts Scholars to showcase their talents, using the brand new, purpose built Music facilities, including rehearsal and performance spaces, a Black-Box Theatre and a new dance studio.
There will be regular concerts and events for those who specialise in Music. Pupils will be expected to engage in at least one of a wide variety of instruments on offer, including vocals, and many will study two instruments. Most Scholars will also play in a range of ensembles and sing in choirs that rehearse weekly.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must have had previous public performance experience (in dance, drama or music)
- For music, applicants should have achieved Grade 5 or above in one or more instruments or voice, or equivalent.
- Evidence of current or recent participation in productions, choirs, orchestras, or competitions
- Letter of recommendation by teacher at current school
For those that specialise in Drama and Dance, productions will take place each year, as well as workshops by leading theatre companies. Scholarships will be reviewed annually, and we will expect our Performing Arts Scholars to:
- Maintain strong effort grades in all subjects
- Receive consistently outstanding attainment and effort grades in the Performing Arts area
- Uphold the values of RSJ and be an excellent role model to other pupils in all
- Aspects of school life, but particularly in their approach to commitment in the Performing Arts
- Involve themselves fully in the co-curricular provision for Performing Arts
- In most cases, to take Performing Arts subjects for IGCSE and A-Level
Performing Arts Scholarship Award
In addition to the normal admissions process, Performing Arts Scholarship applicants who specialise in Music will have an assessment day that includes a performance of two contrasting pieces, either both on the candidate’s principal instrument, or one piece on the candidate’s principal instrument and a second piece on another instrument of choice. Applicants will also participate in a sight reading test on the candidate’s principal instrument, aural tests including sight-singing, and an interview with a member of the SLT and Head of Music.
For pupils that specialise in Drama, they will have additional assessments with an unseen script, a performance of a prepared monologue, and an interview with a member of SLT and the Head of Drama, with an opportunity to present a portfolio.

SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS (YEARS 7-12)
Sport is a core component of the RSJ offering, and we promote sport as a means of developing confidence and resilience; the sports area embodies our ‘The Whole Person, The Whole Point’ philosophy. Sports Scholarships will be awarded to pupils who demonstrate outstanding talent in sports with the expectation that they show leadership and ambition in this area throughout their time in the School.
Sports Scholars’ programme
All Sports Scholars follow a tailored programme and work closely with a specialist mentor. Scholars will benefit from opportunities such as:
- Taking part in the Sports Scholars’ Showcase and other events that bring Scholars together, such as trips and formal dinners
- Opportunities to attend sports based workshops and talks
- Additional support with coaching in their specialist sport(s)
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must have performed competitively e.g., school teams or tournaments, or regional, national, or international representation
- Letter of recommendation by teacher at current school
Scholarships will be reviewed annually, and we will expect our Sports Scholars to:
- Maintain strong effort grades in all subjects receive consistently outstanding attainment and effort grades in the Sports areas
- Uphold the values of RSJ and be an excellent role model to other pupils in all aspects of school life, but particularly in their approach to commitment in the Sports
- Involve themselves fully in the co-curricular provision for sport
Sports Scholarship Award
In addition to the normal admissions application process, Sports Scholarship applicants will have a practical trial, fitness testing, skills practice related to a chosen sport, and an interview with a member of SLT and the Head of PE.

All-Rounder Scholarship (By Invitation only)
The recipients of an All-Rounder Scholarship are typically pupils who will add to the life of RSJ in areas of community action, culture, sport and academia. Characteristically, this pupil will be a very high academic achiever, demonstrating considerable strengths in a number of areas, which may include (but are not limited to) Sport, community action, Drama, Music, Visual and Performing Arts.
All-Rounder Scholars’ Programme
All scholars follow a tailored programme and work closely with a specialist mentor, alongside other scholars. Scholars will benefit from opportunities such as:
- Taking part in Scholars’ events and regular meetings, including formal dinners, symposiums and trips
- Collaborating with fellow scholars from their subject in other schools such as Rugby School UK and Rugby School Thailand, to pursue their development outside of the formal classroom
- Leadership involvement in the School’s forums and societies within the School
Eligibility Criteria:
- High CAT4 performance (or similar)
- Successful additional interview
- Short presentation by candidates on the areas of school life they feel they can contribute
- Letter of recommendation by teacher at current school
Scholarships will be reviewed annually, and we will expect our All-Rounder Scholars to:
- Maintain outstanding effort grades in all subjects
- Receive consistently strong attainment grades in all academic subjects
- Uphold the values of RSJ and be an excellent role model to other pupils in all aspects of school life, but particularly in their commitment to academics
- Involve themselves fully in the academic, co-curricular and pastoral life of the school beyond the classroom
All-Rounder Scholarship Award details will be shared upon invitation from the Principal.
RSJ Scholarship Award process
- Step 1
Apply to RSJ via the OpenApply application portal, stating that you wish your son or daughter to be considered for an RSJ Scholarship Award when completing the initial application. - Step 2
Complete the RSJ admissions process
The initial RSJ admissions application process consists of standardised CAT 4 entrance exams, an English test, and an interview to determine a pupil’s suitability to Rugby School Japan. School references and previous academic reports are taken from the pupil’s current school. - Step 3
Prospective scholars are invited to proceed onto the RSJ Scholarship application process (involving interviews, portfolios, and/or auditions, as stated below). If, during the RSJ admissions process, a prospective scholar demonstrates significant ability and dedication to their chosen discipline, as well as a clear understanding and alignment with the values espoused in RSJ’s ‘The Whole Person, The Whole Point’ philosophy, they will be invited to proceed to the Scholarship application process of their choice.
Application Period
The RSJ Scholarship recruitment process for the academic year 2025-2026 commences in February 2025. Scholarship interviews and assessments will be conducted on the 20th of March and all applicants will be informed of the results within two weeks of their Scholarship assessment.
Internal Candidates
Internal candidates must be recommended by a relevant member of staff and follow the same process as external candidates. If you are a current student and wish to discuss scholarships then you should initially speak with your HM.
