Who are The Blues and Rugby School Japan?

Established in 1996, the Blues is one of the most successful and storied franchises in world rugby - with a proud legacy of winning four championship titles, developing the first Super Club women’s team, and – most recently – winning the Super Rugby Women’s Aupiki and Super Rugby Pacific titles in 2024.

And they are proud to partner with Rugby School Japan, the Greater Tokyo-based sister school of Rugby School, UK - one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious boarding schools, and the birthplace of rugby in 1823.

The Result of Decades Developing
Elite Leaders and Athletes

The 2025 Blues Global Rugby Academy was not born ‘by accident’. Rather it is the result of years of collaboration between Blues Rugby, key rugby clubs in Japan (including Mie Honda Heat, Tokyo Sungoliath, Yokohama Canon Eagles, and Kuria Water Gush), and most recently Rugby School Japan.

These relationships have strengthened the bond between the Blues and Japan, and opened the door to a deeper level of collaboration, which has been amplified and accelerated by our latest partnership with Rugby School Japan.

It is also the result of decades spent developing world-class sports and leadership programmes for our own players and coaching teams – and a desire to share our hard-won lessons with ambitious young people around the world.

So it is by combining the Blues’ coaching expertise, with Rugby School Japan’s long-standing tradition of excellence and character-focused education, that we are able to deliver the Blues Global Rugby Academy to you.

What Skills Will Attendees Develop

During the 5-day Blues Global Rugby Academy, boys and girls aged 15-18 will learn key sporting and life skills that will support their success in rugby, education, and in their future careers, while residing for 5 nights at Rugby School Japan’s state-of-the-art campus in Kashiwanoha, Greater Tokyo.

This residential programme centres around the two core areas of Rugby and Leadership, which have been developed, specifically for youth players, by Blues Rugby coaches in collaboration with Rugby School Japan:

What Skills Will Attendees Develop

Our first area of focus during the 5-day residential camp is to develop participants’ rugby skills in 6 essential areas:

  • Technical Ability
For any player wishing to perform at the highest possible level, technical proficiency is a must.

But is it not enough just to master technical skills in training, players must also have the grit to apply these skills under pressure.

Our Technical Ability course breaks down essential rugby skills into their core components, and provides the confidence to deliver in any situation.
  • Tactics
The world’s most successful rugby players know that the key to success is team planning and preparation:

Do you know your own team’s strengths and weaknesses? Can you objectively analyse your opponents?

This is the difference-maker that takes you from so-so to becoming an indispensable asset to your team.
  • Mental Skills
If you want to add even more weapons to your arsenal than your technical and tactical skills, we’ll teach you some of our most powerful mental techniques.

These are techniques that let you overcome challenges and obstacles both on and off the pitch.

What’s more, you can harness these mental skills on the field, at school, at work, and in day-to-day life.
  • Nutrition
Nourishing your body with the right foods and ingredients is one of the best ways to support your physical training and speed up recovery.

It’s why we’ll share the latest nutritional advice from our health experts, and show you healthy ways to increase, decrease, or maintain weight through better nutrition.

  • Physical Development

Rugby is a multidisciplinary game, which requires players to develop across a range of foundational areas, including strength, flexibility, stability, running mechanics, and more… as well as honing more specialised techniques unique to rugby.

And that is what this part of the programme is all about: mastering the fundamentals and learning rugby-specific conditioning techniques.

  • Holistic Well-being

Even for elite athletes, balance and the avoidance of overtraining are essential.

It’s why we do not just focus on rugby drills. We also guide our participants in ensuring holistic well-being, which means balancing rest, training, match play, as well as making good life choices outside of the game.

This lies at the heart of our ethos and helps our athletes live happy and successful lives.

These are a “must-know” for anyone seeking to develop their capabilities on the pitch. And, when combined with the programme’s second core focus (Leadership), they will also provide an all-important off-the-pitch advantage too.

Blues Youth Leadership

Inspired by our Blues Captain, Patrick Tuipulotu and taught by a team of Blues Rugby high-performance coaches, the second component of the 5-day Blues Global Rugby Academy focuses on developing our participants’ youth leadership skills - so that by the end of this programme attendees will:

  • Be inspired to discover their unique purpose and “Why”
Giving them the resilience to overcome challenges and achieve their full potential.
  • Grow greater self-awareness
Understanding their strengths, personality type, and areas for development
  • Develop a personalised career plan
Under the guidance of Blues’ Rugby Career Coaches
  • Build resilience, self-esteem, and communications skills both on and off the pitch
  • Learn the importance of self-reflection, appreciation for high-performance environments and the importance of personal standards and values
